Eileen has taken audiences up and down the peaks and valleys of life at festivals, songwriter showcases, and coffeehouses throughout the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia) and is excited to be in Nashville. “Endless Night,” off her No Place But Up EP, has been played on digitalrevolutionradio. Eileen's passionate writing and vocal jump style developed among lifelong influences as varied as Evanescence, Journey, Miranda Lambert, Katy Perry, Foreigner, Sara Bareilles, Keith Urban, Sheryl Crow, Green Day, Kacey Musgraves, and Gretchen Wilson. Fans compare her to Sheryl Crow, the Indigo Girls, Jewel, Sara McLachlan, and Stevie Nicks. A music career highlight was playing the community tent just before Three Dog Night took the stage in Havre de Grace, MD.

Music for the Peaks and Valleys of Life

This week on my journey through the peaks and valleys of life:

Here I am in Nashville, working on some new songs! During a critique session, I was reminded how it is often difficult to be objective about our own work. As I have told my students, setting the scene and the theme in the opening lines is crucial. The opening lines for my new song, "Unwound" were:

"We held onto a tree at 10,000 feet           Looking at green fields and tiny streets"

The evaluator did not get that the singer was climbing a mountain. I ran it past another evaluator to see if I got the same comment. I did - that evaluator did not get it either. So I changed the opening two lines:

"We finally reached the peak on our hands and knees                                                             And looked down on the valley from 10,000 feet"

I am also rewriting the rest of the first verse to make the story more clear.

Here's a recording of the first draft (before I changed the first 2 lines).

****Please share this blog on Facebook AND ask your friends to sign up for my enews on the website. If you do that, I'll send you my next rough draft of this song so you can comment on it. Thanks!!!!
