The title comes from legal terminology. In many states, mutual consent is required for a court to grant a divorce. This means that women are often trapped in abusive marriages because her husband won't grant permission for the divorce.
I wrote this with Bob Huston here in Nashville.

Lyrics

Without Your Consent
By Eileen Bernstein and Bob Huston

I was a rising star, then I became a Mom
And I became dependent on you, so I could raise our sons
Here you are tellin’ me to pay my own doctor bills
Cause I’d be takin’ money from our kids if they got ill

CHORUS:

You have the power, cause I watched the kids
I didn’t make the money, but you did
I know in the courtroom, the picture you’ll present
So I’m walking out the door, without your consent

On snowy days the heat’s off, when I rise at 6AM
You drive off in your Mercedes, I turn the heat on again
What good are steak dinners on our anniversary
When I’m cold and you won’t let me buy groceries

CHORUS:

You have the power, cause I watched the kids
I didn’t make the money, but you did
I know in the courtroom, the picture you’ll present
So I’m walking out the door, without your consent

Bridge:

Just like all the lights in the house
You let the love in your heart go out

Repeat Chorus
